Chando
And Chapla are introduced to the audience along
with the rest of the Shukla Bhavan clan. As the
sisters frolic into Kanak’s room, she becomes
nostalgic, reminiscing about her own best friend
Mani (who now lives in Mumbai). Kanak, who has been
consistently feeling unwell, screams as a shooting
pain grips her stomach. Chapla insists on calling
for a doctor despite her mother being against it.
An altercation takes place between Leela and Chapla,
but Chapla pays no heed and calls for the doctor.
After examining Kanak the doctor informs the family
that her case is fatal and that nothing can be done
to save her. Kanak overhears the doctor’s
diagnosis and is horrified. She is terribly concerned
about her daughter Chando’s welfare after
her demise. She fears that Chando too, will have
to endure the same ill-treatment she faced at the
hands of her Jethani Leela. Kanak urges Chando to
call her best friend Mani in Mumbai. Chando calls
Mani, who promises to leave for Banaras at once.
Mani along with her son Jalad reaches Banaras and
has a tearful re-union with her best friend Kanak.
Kanak insists on being taken to the temple. At the
temple Kanak asks Mani to take Chando with her to
Mumbai and also seeks a reaffirmation of the promise
they had made to each other before their children
were born. Mani assures Kanak that she will take
Chando with her to Mumbai and as promised will have
Chando and Jalad married. Kanak breathes her last
in Mani’s arms. Mani is shattered by her best
friend’s death.
