The
entire family mourns at Kanak’s funeral. Mani
is shattered to the core. She asks her son Jalad
to perform Kanak’s last rites. Leela sits
in a corner and pretends to be really devastated
but as soon as she gets a moment alone with Kanak’s
body, she steals the precious family heirloom adorning
her neck. When Mani notices Kanak’s bare neck,
she replenishes her body with her own jewelry. Chando
is hysterical beyond control and Tauji, Chapla and
Jalad have to pull her away from Kanak’s body.
After the last rites are performed, as per tradition
the Brahmin Bhoj ceremony takes place and Mani urges
Chapla to feed Chando. Chapla tries to console Chando
and feeds her lovingly. A few days down the line,
Mani approaches Tauji to inform him that she wishes
to take Chando to Mumbai with her. Tauji agrees,
saying that he knew that it was Kanak’s last
wish and must be complied with. Leela refuses to
let Chando go to Mumbai. Tauji is angered by her
attitude and reprimands her, upon which Leela insists
that if Chando must leave, she must do so only after
she has handed over Kanak’s ‘tijori’
keys. A heated altercation ensues and an enraged
Tauji slaps Leela in everyone’s presence.
Mani tells Tauji that he can keep the ‘tijori’
keys and that he can give Chando whatever he wishes
to on her wedding day. She further adds that Chando
doesn’t need anything from anyone anymore
since she has her own home and wealth in Mumbai.
Chando is touched by Mani’s comment. Leela
is remonstrating in her room when Lanka approaches
her and tells her that she must act in accordance
with the situation. She must be extra sweet to Chando
because Mani adores Chando. She further adds that
Mani can be very useful to them since she has a
lot of money. Leela agrees to do the needful. The
Shukla clan bids Chando a tearful adieu. Chando
and Chapla are particularly devastated that they
have to be separated from each other. Chapla stands
on the balcony, watching Chando get into the car.
Jalad looks up at her and steals a glance. Lanka
notices this. After Mani’s car has left Lanka
tells Leela that Jalad’s eyes were on Chapla
before he left. Leela is jubilant.
